The struggle currently taking place in the mobile industry between hardware manufactures and operators is being mirrored in the music business. Artists want more control of how their music is distributed, they want to engage their fans using today's newly available social mediums and they've recognized that this silly concept of a record label oligopoly needs to die; likewise manufactures want to tap into the consumer space directly rather than letting the operators take all the credit.

Reuters has an interview with Dave Stewart, now heading Nokia's Artist Advisory Council and Dr. Tero Ojanperä, who as of the turn of 2008 is now VP of Entertainment & Communities, to discuss the current digital music market, how mobile is changing everything and the Nokia Music Store.

Sony Ericsson Z750a

Behold, the first HSDPA-enabled Sony Ericsson phone for the U.S. market is here. It's the Z750a which we previously saw leaked with AT&T logo and on the FCC pages. You already know everything about it — it's a stylish phone with a “reflective mirror clamshell casing” and hidden organic light-emitting diode (OLED) reflective display screen on the front of the phone that illuminates when receiving a call, displaying caller ID. There's also a 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth (A2DP), support for AT&T's Mobile Email, full HTML browser and a Memory Stick Micro (M2) slot on board…

The Z750a will be available in three “tantalizing” colors — Mysterious Purple, Phantom Grey and Rose Pink — starting from early April for $49.99 after a $100 mail-in-rebate and a new two-year service contract… Keep reading after the break for the official release.

PRESS RELEASE - Mobile phone owners no longer have to decide between high performance and attractive design when choosing a new handset with the new Sony Ericsson Z750a. Available in the U.S. exclusively at AT&T, the Z750a is an inexpensive and stylish handset with a mirrored clamshell design and a hidden exterior display that illuminates when the phone is in use. As Sony Ericsson's first 3G/HSDPA handset for the U.S. market, the Z750a features mobile broadband for a high-speed World wide web connection and access to multimedia content that complements its multimedia player, 2.0 megapixel camera, Internet1 browser and e-mail capability using AT&T's Mobile Email application.

“Sony Ericsson continues to expand its North American portfolio with a distinctive and signature design that combines entertainment, style and speed in a sleek device,” said Karen Morris, vice president of marketing for Sony Ericsson North America. “Representing one of our most distinctive and colorful 3G clamshells, the Z750a will appeal to those who want to do more with their phone — share music, high-quality photos, browse the Internet — and project a sophisticated image all their own. We’re delighted that AT&T will offer this device in the U.S. along with the hugely successful W580 Walkman Phone.”

The Z750a works hard, offering features such as data download transfer speeds from 600 to 1400 kbps from AT&T's High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 3G network, support for AT&T's Mobile Email, a 2.0 megapixel camera, full HTML web browsing1 abilities and stereo Bluetooth support (A2DP). The Z750a also plays hard with 3D gaming abilities, a media player that supports numerous media file types for listening to your favorite music tracks and video. The phone has up to 26MB of internal memory and is Memory Stick Micro (M2) compatible - currently upgradeable to 8GB - providing ample storage space for photos, videos, music, games and more.

No matter how smart and powerful the Z750a may be on the inside, it still dares to be sleek and sophisticated on the outside. The Z750a has a reflective mirror clamshell casing and hidden organic light-emitting diode (OLED) reflective display screen on the front of the phone that discretely illuminates when receiving a call, displaying caller identification. When active, it also displays battery life, text message alerts and other useful information. To match anyone's personal style, the Z750a launches in three tantalizing color choices: Mysterious Purple, Phantom Grey and Rose Pink.

The Sony Ericsson Z750a will be available at AT&T stores and authorized dealers in early April for $49.99 after a $100 mail-in-rebate and new two-year service contract.

AOL mobile games portal

AOL is launching a free mobile web-based (WAP) games through its mobile portal at wap.aol.com/games. New York-based Cellufun is is powering up the new site and is delivering all of its WAP-based titles — including the award-winning Call of the Pharaoh, Space Wars, Chess, Ice Fishing and more — to AOL's mobile portal visitors.

The idea of course is to provide the website visitors with a free content/games, while making money out of advertising. In that sense, AOL is making use of its Third Screen Media acquisition as all mobile banner ads on the games will be powered by their technology.

Both parties seem satisfied with the deal, with AOL's Senior VP Steve Murphy saying: “Games are a great complement to the robust entertainment offerings available through the AOL mobile portal.” On the other hand, Cellufun's CEO Arthur Goikhman stated the alliance will grant the already strong Cellufun community to “grow even stronger, and offer more exposure to the Cellufun name.”

AT&T musicAT&T keeps expanding its music offering. Lately they've announced two new music applications - mSpot's Make-UR-Tones and Remix. The first mentioned app grants customers to customize ringtones from their favorite part of a song (1-30 seconds), right on their handsets. The mSpot Make-UR-Tones is available for a monthly subscription of $6.99 for three ringtones, with additional customized ringtones available for purchase on an a la carte basis for $2.99. The application works on Samsung SYNC, A737, A747 and the Motorola V3xx and will expand to additional phones in the near future.

On the other hand, Remix gives customers access to their PC-based music collections directly from their phones. The result is more freedom to listen to the songs they want, when they want. Needless to say, unlimited data plan is preferred when using Remix, but also a willingness to pay $9.99 per month. Monthly subscription grants 75 song downloads, and AT&T is also preparing a Remix booster pack for $2.99, which provides an additional 10 songs. Remix is compatible with the Samsung SYNC, A737 and the LG SHINE phones.

LooptVerizon isn't kidding when it comes to social networking. Few days ago, they've announced their customers will have a swift access to MySpace Mobile and now they’re launching social-mapping service Loopt.

Previously, we saw Sprint partnering with Loopt and under these circumstances — when two of the leading mobile operators in the U.S. are adding Loopt to their offerings — the service is getting the real traction it deserves.

From the release:

With Loopt, Verizon Wireless customers can leverage their phones' location-based services abilities to share location information, status messages and geo-tagged pics with their community of friends. Starting from the beginning of April, Verizon customers will be able to get Loopt for $3.99 per month. More than 20 Get It Now phones are supported, including LG Chocolate and MOTORIZR Z6tv. Unlimited data plan is the ideal way to go, but it's not required… Full release is available from here.
