THQ’s snarky, irritable alien invader Crypto is finally hitting the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this fall in Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon. I had my first opportunity to catch a sneak peek at the game last week at THQ’s Gamer’s day, and it’s shaping up to look like, well, other Destroy All Humans! titles.

Sprint Samsung InstinctWhen it comes to innovation, functionality, wow factor, and technology, the Samsung Instinct takes top honors at CTIA Las Vegas 2008. Of all the handsets on display at the mobile industry tradeshow, a panel of 31 judges has proclaimed that the Sprint-bound Samsung Instinct is the most innovative and “coolest” device at the show.

I've mentioned the Samsung Instinct a few times already, so suffice it to say that the 2 megapixel camera, full-body touchscreen, microSD, Bluetooth 2.0, and GPS-toting Samsung Instinct is getting prepped to take on the iPhone. And, with Visual Voicemail, the Sprint Samsung Instinct should do quite well for itself.

Announced during Sprint CEO Dan Hesse’s keynote address on Tuesday, Instinct offers consumers an industry-leading user experience by combining full touch-screen functionality with fast speeds available on the nation’s largest mobile broadband network. This revolutionary device speeds up the user experience like no other touch-screen phone and brings the customer’s most-used applications and contacts within a single finger tap.

“We are extremely honored to receive these accolades for Instinct and we are confident that it will provide our customers with a great way to experience Sprint’s fast NOW Network,” said John Garcia, senior vice president of Product Development and chief marketing officer for Sprint. “Instinct is representative of the innovative portfolio of products Sprint offers to our customers. These awards reinforce Samsung’s best-in-class leadership in innovation and design.”

Instinct has a high-tech look with huge, vibrant touch screen featuring localized tactile feedback, called haptics, which grant the virtual QWERTY keypad and other operations to become a sensory experience. As Sprint’s first EV-DO Rev A consumer-centric device, Instinct provides the capability to swiftly browse the Web, access business or personal e-mail, share pictures, listen to commercial-free radio and more at broadband speeds.

Instinct boasts many advanced features including Visual Voicemail allowing users to listen to messages in their order of preference and manage them with a easy tap of the screen. This device also provides support for corporate and consumer (POP3) email, multitasking capabilities that allow the user to play music in background mode while surfing the Internet, texting or playing games, a 2.0 megapixel camera with camcorder and expandable microSD memory of up to 8GB. Additional features include advanced stereo Bluetooth® 2.0, integrated world clock and picture caller ID, along with the capability to access services such as SMS voice and text messaging with threaded text, Phone as Modem, and Sprint Mobile Sync.

Instinct comes with virtually each accessory the user needs to care about the device’s full abilities right out of the box. Contents include a 2GB microSD™ card that holds approximately 2,000 songs from Sprint Music Store, two standard 1,000 mAmp batteries offering up to 5.75 hours of continuous talk time each, battery charging sleeve, travel charger, USB cable, 3.5mm headphones with built-in microphone, and leather case with stylus.

Customers can go to www.nowisgood.com to register to be among the first to own this innovative device. It will be available in June in all Sprint retail channels including www.sprint.com and 1-800-SPRINT1. Pricing for Instinct has not yet been determined. In order for customers to experience the full capabilities of the device, Instinct requires activation on a Sprint Everything pricing plan offering unlimited data starting at just $69.99 per month.

Two other products available exclusively from Samsung and Sprint received honors in the CTIA 2008 E-Tech Awards competition – Samsung ACE received third place in the Mobile CE – Phones/Smartphone category and Airave won first place in the Networking/Infrastructure category. In a country that hasn't even seen the official launch of the iPhone, more than two-thirds of the Chinese population is aware of the iPhone. There are so many iPhone clones coming out of Chinese factories, it's almost impossible not to ignore the counterfeit side of things. Perhaps the prevalence of China-made iPhone copies has helped make the iPhone an icon.

Most Chinese aware of iPhonePearl Research has found that, when asked about the iPhone, a full 68% of Chinese are aware of the iPhone. The study was conducted with 450 online participants and 24 in-depth interviews. Not too surprisingly, female respondents noted the iPhone's design and “hot” factor as reasons to buy the device, while males were more apt to cite the utility of the iPhone as a huge draw.

But, unlike other iPhone markets, the study found that potential iPhone users in China are less prone to hop on the highly restrictive Chinese information superhighway. High data costs are cited as reasons that China's iPhone hopefuls are a lot less likely to surf the heavily Chinese-government censored world wide web.

With 88% of iPod owners interested in the iPhone, Apple would do well to crack the Chinese market sooner rather than later. Although, the current price of the iPhone is a significant barrier to entry in China.

Vibrating Braille cellphone technologyRaised Braille-bumps on handset keypads are good for dialing a phone number and other easy tasks, but it can be a little more demanding to tap out text messages or do anything more complex by feel alone. To help the blind get more out of their mobile phones, Nobuyuki Sasaki, a former Tsukuba University of Technology professor, and his team have developed a new technology that converts the keypad key-presses into vibrating pulses (presumably correlated to the Braille alphabet).

The vibrations and key-press conversions are handled by an external terminal. When the user “pushes numbers on the keypad corresponding to Braille symbols, two terminals attached to the receiver's phone vibrate at a specific rate to create a message.” The team's next goal is to make the terminal smaller and more portable. Hopefully small enough to be a commercially viable solution for blind cellphone users.

Guitar Hero III 3 coming to Windows MobileThat's right! Guitar Hero III fans with Windows Mobile smartphones are just a stone's throw away from rocking out to the solo-riffs of their favorite rockstars whenever they please.

lokeuei over at Backstage at MED has dropped the Guitar Hero 3 bomb on faux-rock fans. Magmic is preparing the launch the GH3 gaming title on the Windows Mobile platform in the near future. I can personally attest to the addictive, time-wasting dangers of Guitar Hero III, and the prospect of taking it with me on the road is frightening. On the other hand, ever since I had my ass handed to me by some likely 13-year old in South Korea in an online match, GHIII has lost its appeal - talk about getting discouraged.

Look for Guitar Hero III to be available for purchase for Windows Mobile here. Both subscription and outright-purchase versions will be available.

Walt Mossberg says he doesnIt was nice to think that Uncle Walt had an inside line on Apple's plans to launch the 3G iPhone in just a couple months, but that's where it ends. The seasoned gadget reviewer has just done an about face on his comment that the 3G iPhone will launch in 60 days.

Apparently, the comment was overblown and Walt Mossberg says that he has no better idea about the next-generation 3G iPhon's launch than any of us do. Walt says that his comment saying that the 3G iPhone is due out in 60 days was merely based on widely held speculation that the next-gen iPhone will be launching in June or July - the same speculation that we've been holding onto for months now. The comment was made during an aside regarding data networks and Mossberg is surprised that the blogosphere made such a massive deal about it. [Hey Walt, that's what happens when you're Walt Mossberg and you enjoy the good graces of Steve Jobs.]

“If I knew when this date was, why would I announce it in the middle of a sentence at the Finnish embassy, rather than report it in the Wall Street Journal?” says Walt Mossberg. Good point, Walt. Good point.

We're still going to bank on a mid-2008 release for the 3G iPhone. If we hold our breath long enough, Apple might just feel obligated to meet our expectations…right?
