EA Mobile has announced availability of five new titles for Mobile devices. They are:

  • The Sims 2 Castaway
  • The Sims Pool
  • Monopoly Here & Now
  • Yahtzee Adventures
  • Merv Griffin's Crosswords

Granted, this isn't the most exciting of news, so I moseyed on over to the EA Mobile site to take a look around. It brought up a few things in my mind:

  • EA own my favourite Mobile game of all time - Tetris - the ultimate spare time killer!
  • EA have mobilised quite a fair share of their Console catalogue - albeit the names are there, but the versions of game are quite rudimentary compared to their console cousins
  • EA also has DOOM!
  • EA own JAMDAT

It's going to be very interesting to see, with the advent of the games powerhouse that is N-Gage, how EA interwork with it - between N-Gage and EA, I would advocate there is the potential for some extremely good games - genuinely compelling, but still with that all-important “dip in, dip out” feature. Give me Rainbow Six Las Vegas 2 on my N95 and I'll be a happy man!

STMicroelectronics, the people responsible for the Nomadik chipset inside the Nokia N96 that has yet to ship and the 5th largest player in the semiconductor, and NXP, the people who built the PNX4903 chipset that enables ridiculopusly cheap mobile phones with multimedia capabilites to be created and the 9th largest semiconductor company, are merging their wireless businesses by creating a joint venture.

STM will own 80% of the JV, which is expected to be fully operational, profitable and debt free by the third quarter of this year.

“The wireless semiconductor industry requires consolidation,” said Jean-Francois Baril, senior vice president of sourcing and procurement with Nokia. “We welcome the emergence of this joint venture creating a strong player serving the top mobile phone manufacturers, understanding the needs of these customers and providing the required speed of innovation.”

FCC emergency SMS text message systemIn a time of national emergency, it makes sense to have a system in place to alert all affected Americans. Email is too slow and unreliable, while individual phone calls to the affected population is just unreasonable. What the US needs is a nationwide SMS text messaging alert system.

And, that's exactly what the FCC is proposing on Wednesday. The new program would put in place a national system by which to alert people natural disasters, terrorist attacks/activities, and even child abductions/Amber alerts. Wireless providers will be given the option to participate in the program. Furthermore, wireless subscribers will be given the option to opt-out of the program if they would prefer not get emergency text messages.

Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T all said that they'd participate in the program when the FCC announces its proposal. AT&T said that they still need to review the proposal, but they “look forward to offering mobile emergency alerts to our customers.” Sprint plans to participate in the program, provided that FCC-proposed system mirrors the one recommended by an advisory group.

A federal bureau that’ll handle the emergency information and creation of text messages has yet to be named. But, once appointed, wireless providers will have 10 months to meet program-requirements if they plan to opt-in on the emergency SMS text messaging program.

ad1.pngb.jpgAdMob has announced that it has served it's 20 billionth Mobile Ad. Apparently, “the 20 billionth impression was from financial services conglomerate HDFC and was served in India at 1.56 GMT on Tuesday March 25th. The user was browsing Cricinfo’s mobile site on a Nokia N70.” Check it out - watch AdMob nail that stat!

In other related stats, apparently there are 3900+ mobile websites using the AdMob solution, giving AdMob a reach that includes about 40% of US subscribers.

Well, that's data you can't argue with (well, you could if you were really pedantic, but hey, that's not us, right?) - 20bn Ads in a few short years. Using the “scary maths” algorithm that I just made up, that means everyone in the world has seen over 3 Mobile Ads each, or, a few people have probably got bleeding eyes from having seen way more than their fair share! The truth, may just be somewhere in between……

Orange (France) is to roll out a new Mobile service later in 2008 that apparently is going to have 6 Television channels and VoD (Video On Demand) for TV, Computer, and most importantly, Mobile!

Orange made the “convergence” announcement at the MIPTV 2008 event held in Cannes - logical really, since IPTV in many ways will form the backbone of the service.

The service will have 6 channels, 5 of which will be different, and the sixth which will simulcast in HD. In parallel, there will also be on-demand programming to Television, Personal computer, and Mobile.

The Mobile service will be 3G strreaming, and I would suspect this still to be Unicast, as oppose to the Multicast MBMS servivce that’s being touted as as a possible challenger to DVB-H.

Come on Orange, bring some convergent love over to the UK - we won't bite, honest!

Panasonic has announced the sale of it's 100 millionth Mobile phone in Japan. It has supplied devices to carriers including NTT DoCoMo, KDDI, and Softbank.

Pansonic first began selling mobile comms terminals in 1979 - the first mobile phone being in 1987. Since then Panasonic has gone on to be Number 1 or Number 2 in the Japanese market for several years. The 100 millionth unit will be a FOMA P905i sold to NTT, for those that are interested.

That’s some quantity of devices to get through - even though not maybe as much as some other notable vendors, it's still a milestone in it's own right - well done Pana!

A survey by in the US by QuickPlay Media has found that 47% of consumers 18 to 34 years old do not even know whether their carrier offers any video services. 500 customers were surveyed, and the results released at CTIA.

Apparently only 13% stated they use Mobile Video services every day - even though the pool is a small one, that's worrying anecdotal data for the industry.

On a more positive note though, QuickPlay also recently announced that they’ve formed a partnership with Amobee to being video advertising on Mobile to the mainstream party:

Amobee and QuickPlay offer a full-service mobile video advertising solution that attracts new users to mobile video and unleashes new advertising revenue opportunities for providers. The joint solution also gives brands the chance to purchase rich media mobile ad inventory. As part of this collaboration, Amobee will work with advertising agencies to source the ads, as well as provide ad server capabilities and dynamic ad selection based on available user profiles and contextual information. QuickPlay’s OpenVideo™ media management platform will power streaming video and provide dynamic, real-time video ad insertion. Together, Amobee and QuickPlay provide comprehensive, unified reporting, including key metrics such as ads watched and the precise amount of time each ad is viewed.

As we have stated on IntoMobile many times before, there are lots of catalysts or stiumlants required to get mainstream adoption of Mobile video - removing or lessening the cost barrier is definitely going to help, and Ads provide that alternative revenue stream.

I wonder when we’ll hit critical mass on Mobile video - now that's a question no-one has been able to definitively answer to-date… thoughts, readers?

The Sharper Image might have been the favorite of geeks in the ’90s, but it’s now a shadow of its former self.

After being delisted from Nasdaq, filing for bankruptcy, and announcing that it will close 96 of its 184 stores, the end is near for the specialty electronics retailer.

Or is it?

In an interesting development, The Sharper Image announced on Thursday that its chairman, Jerry W. Levin, is stepping down to pursue the possibility of acquiring the company’s stock and assets.

Neither Levin nor The Sharper Image were ready to speculate about what his plans are, but it begs a question: “What is going on at The Sharper Image?” It’s a company that has flown under the radar for quite some time, and most have written it off as a relic of the past, but I think there’s more to it than that. If nothing else, the soap opera over at The Sharper Image is extremely interesting to watch.
