Even though the Dreamcast couldn’t sustain profit in the marketplace, it featured some of the ideal videogames ever produced and remains as one of the greatest consoles to date. Comparisons have been made between the Dreamcast and the Xbox 360 before, and rightfully so.

Many of our favorites (more recently, Ikaruga) have been ported to the 360 in one form or another, with the latest being the first Soul Calibur. It may sound too good to be true, but according to a press briefing by Namco Bandai, it isn’t.

Soul Calibur on Xbox Live Arcade will be presented in all its original glory, and then some. Not only will we get every mode from the Dreamcast version, there will also be on the web leaderboards and get this — the entire game will be in high-definition.

Because the excitement of this news has no doubt caused you to soil yourself, I’m going to make this short. The fact that there’s no on the web multiplayer infuriates me to no end, but as long as the XBLA port plays like the Dreamcast version and looks phenomenal in HD, it’ll be a “DO WANT” for sure.

Nokia was the first phone manufacture to commit to the Silverlight platform, promising to deliver it on their S40, S60 and Maemo based products, and more recently Scott Guthrie, Corporate VP of Microsoft's Developer Division, told a crowd of attendees at the ReMIX08 conference that “big” deals with the other phone manufactures are going to be publicly announced within the next few months.

The platform wars are brewing and the fight is going to be nasty one this year and spilling into 2009. Adobe in one corner recently announced that they're aligning the mobile and platform divisions, which can only mean that we're going to see one runtime environment that spans across mobile, desktop and everything in between.

Microsoft is working their tails off trying to get as many people as they have the ability to to download and install Silverlight on their computer, they'll push it via Windows Update and the upcoming Olypmic games in China, and now they're fighting to get on each handset.

Nokia purchased Trolltech for their Qt runtime and they too plan to put Qt everywhere.

Mozilla is porting Firefox to mobile devices under the proclamation that they want to bring their browser onto mobile phones, but they could just as easily announce Prism for Mobile and offer the same development environment that uses web technologies and XUL to create experiances across desktop, handsets and embedded systems.

I'm a Mac, I'm a Personal computer, that argument is looking increasingly irrelevant. It's about who creates a runtime that spans across the device in your living room, the device in your office and the device in your pocket and makes it easy for developers to write code and designers to create experiances that are custom tailored to each of those particular usage models.

This isn't about who has the ideal implementation either, like the common misconception that Darwin stated the strongest survive, the reality and truth of the situation is that the species best fit for adapting to new environments will make it and reproduce, likewise the companies that are going to throw as much money as they possibly can to get built into as many devices as possible will be the victors of the new runtime wars.

Just recently we wrote about Truphone and their plans to roll out Truphone SIM to allow users to take and make cheap phone calls, even when they're outside of a hotspot. Now they've announced a new round (Series B) of venture capital funding that brought them additional £16.5m ($32.7m).

The round was led by private investors, with all of Truphone's existing backers – Burda Digital Ventures, Eden Ventures, Independent News & Media and Wellington Partners – also participating.

In December 2006, Truphone raised £12.5m ($24.5m) in Series A funding, believed to be the European technology sector's largest Series A venture funding of 2006.

CarrefourFrench supermarket chain Carrefour is launching its own MVNO telephone service called Carrefour Mova in Poland. This is not their first time, though. Poland is the fifth country in Europe where they’re offering their mobile phone service. Other markets include France, Belgium, Spain and Italy.

According to Carrefour Polska's new chairman Gilles Roudy, Carrefour Mova plans to win around 100,000 clients in the course of a year. Aside from offering equally low-cost phone calls to all other carriers in the country, their key selling point is the possibility of gaining free minutes in exchange for shopping at Carrefour.

Carrefour Mova is relying on Polkomtel's infrastructure for its services.

Nokia N95 8GB firmware update has auto rotation built inSure, you might already be rocking that cool RotateMe hack on your Nokia N95, but there's nothing like a little manufacturer-sanctioned love straight from Espoo to make you fall in love with screen-rotation on your N95. A new firmware (v20.0.016) is available for the Nokia N95 8GB (sorry folks, only the European N95-2 is supported for now) that comes with built-in support for the automatic screen rotation feature that the iPhone made so popular (sorry, I had to get that in there).

You can enable and disable the screen rotation feature at will, so there's basically no reason not to download and install this latest firmware for your Nokia N95 8GB. That is, unless you're rocking the N95 8GB NAM (N95-4), in which case, you'll need to wait it out a bit longer.

Grab the new firmware here.
