iPhone coming to Vodafone India? At least that's what folks supposedly in-the-know are saying. While the US the Europe are waiting eagerly for the 3G iPhone to make its global debut, Indians on Vodafone could have an iPhone 8GB to look forward to later this year. More specifically, the 8GB iPhone is purportedly slated to drop on Vodafone India in September, with the iPhone 16GB launch scheduled for 2009, “based on buyer response.”

But, legitimate iPhone hopefuls in India (there are plenty of unlocked iPhones apparently running in India) will have to muster a heft Rs 28,000 entry fee. That would put the Indian iPhone at a $700 USD price point! And that's not even for the 3G iPhone.

An iPhone launch on Vodafone India is a lock for this year (according to rumors), it's just a matter of when the launch will happen.

All you Windows-using iPhoners out there can join the Pwnage club with the release of winpwn. Just like the Mac-only PwnageTool released by the iPhone Dev Team, winpwn grants you to “pwn” your iPhone using your Windows machine.

Pwn-ing your iPhone requires that you build a custom IPSW (firmware/OS) bundle and upload it to your iPhone. Once the IPSW is built, you can “pwn” your iPhone by making it accept this un-sanctioned firmware. Uploading a custom OS to your iPhone grants you force iTunes to restore your iPhone with third-party applications already installed and unlocked/activated for use with any GSM carrier. That means you can build iPhone OS files that are pre-jailbroken, saving you the time and (minor) hassle of jailbreaking, unlocking, activating and installing third-party applications on your iPhone.

winpwn available to pwn iphones with windows

Grab the winpwn package here. Keep in mind that it's in beta testing, so don't be surprised if you stumble upon a bug or two. Oh, and check out this tutorial before you dive in (if you can tear yourself away from staring at that too-cute kitty). Better safe than sorry, as they say.

HP iPAQ 900 910 914 on FCC with Windows Mobile 6.0We've been waiting and waiting for HP to finally get real with their iPAQ 900-series Windows Mobile smartphone. Just as we were about to give up on HP's smartphone offering, the HP iPAQ 900 pops up on the FCC's website.

We were expecting the HP iPAQ 910 to get its launch on with AT&T back in September - after getting word on the juicy hardware details of the HP iPAQ 914. With a 2.5 inch 240×320 touchscreen, 3 megapixel camera, A-GPS, WiFi b/g, Google Maps, and all that delicious 850/1900Mhz HSDPA love from AT&T's 3G network, it's going to be hard to wait for the official carrier-launch of the Windows Mobile 6.0-powered HP iPAQ 910.

The FCC is keeping mum on the subject of carrier availability and pricing, so we're just going to have to hope to HP feels like dropping a couple crumbs of info our way in the near future. Even though, with the FCC's blessing, the future is looking good for the HP iPAQ 900/910/914.

AT&T WiFi HotSpot for iPhone at StarbucksSo, I'm sitting here at a Starbucks in beautiful Santa Monica, CA., spending another gorgeous day indoors. Rather than dwelling on all the fresh air I'm passing up, I decided to fire up my iPhone's Safari browser and stream some music from the web through SeeqPod. Lo and behold, the usual T-Mobile HotSpot offering is now complemented by an AT&T HotSpot service - and the AT&T WiFi HotSpot login page has been changed!

Now, I find myself entering my AT&T credentials (this particular location doesn't offer free AT&T WiFi HotSpot service) into an iPhone-optimized interface, rather than dealing with T-Mobile's login portal. The process is easy and even fun to do on my iPhone. It's the small things that make life interesting.

I dug around a bit and found that AT&T should start offering 2 free hours of WiFi service and should finish changing over approximately 7,000 Starbucks locations to AT&T WiFi HotSpots by Summer. And, the iPhone-specific login portal will be available at all AT&T HotSpot locations nationwide. This particular Starbucks doesn't offer the free service, so it's safe to state that the new service will be rolled out in stages.

AT&T WiFi HotSpot for iPhone at StarbucksThe new iPhone-specific AT&T HotSpot portal should also offer a bevy of WiFi access options, including the use of pre-paid cards, membership, one-day passes, and coupons. Unfortunately this particular Starbucks doesn't offer those login options. Here's a picture of what the new portal should look like.

Feel free to chime in and leave a comment if your local Starbucks offers AT&T HotSpot access. It'd be nice to get an idea for how many Starbucks locations are already switched over to AT&T's HotSpot service.

1603141002_a64b1e48b3_m.jpgAccording to an internal memo that has been floating around Motorola since Wednesday, the structure of the new mobile unit that’s about to be spun off will merge hardware and software engineers into one group in hopes that this will decrease time to market. Hardware designers and the people who actually write the software that goes on the hardware will be working side by side and reporting to the head of their respective groups.

The feature phone and multimedia product divisions within Motorola will be merged since “distinctions between the categories are already blurring, given the pace of change in the overall handset market,” stated Jennifer Erickson, Motorola Spokeswoman.

Motorola CEO Greg Brown admitted that “software is a major weak point for the company's mobile handsets.” You think?

It's Friday and we hope everyone is enjoying their weekend, but it seems 5000 people at AT&T won’t be as soon as they find out that they've been axed.

Back in January Google announced that they were going to give $10 million out to the developers that create the most interesting applicatiosn for Google's Android, the deadline was April 14 and the results were tallied up: 1788 applications were submitted!

Of those 50 finalists will get $25,000 to contine development when handsets become available and of those 10 will get $100,000 and 10 will get $275,000. The math didn't seem right, so I plugged them into Google and it turns out the rewards are only $5 million. What gives?

Apple patent application details head mounted laser displayHead-mounted displays are nothing new, and neither is the prospect of displaying content from a mobile phone or other mobile device at nose-distance. But, Apple's newest patent application to go public details plans for a laser-based head mounted display that lightens the load by separating the “laser engine” from the goggle-like head mounted display.

“A user simply plugs their handheld video player such as the iPod manufactured by Apple Computer of Cupertino, Calif., into the compact laser engine attached to their belt, and places the headset on their head. The user then selects a video to be played at the handheld video player (viewing through transparent display elements).”

When not in use, the goggles can be used as normal eyeglasses or sunglasses, as no image or video is projected onto the lens. It'd be great to walk around with a heads-up display of Google Maps or an RSS feed from my iPhone. That is, as long as the goggles are at least somewhat attractive. What good is heads-up video if you’ve to deal with sneers and snickers from everyone around you?

AT&T set to launch mobile TV on Samsung AccessIt's been a long time coming and after more delays than we’ve patience for, AT&T might finally be launching their Mobile TV service on May 4. With the Samsung Access ready to rock and roll with AT&T's MediFLO-powered Mobile Television service, the new service can't launch fast enough.

Word on the street has AT&T launching the new service in a three-tiered setup. The lowest (and cheapest) “Limited” package will run $13 a month and offers Fox, CBS, NBC, and NBC News. An extra couple bucks will get you the “Basic” package for $15 a month - offering Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, CNN Mobile, Sony Pictures, and ESPN in addition to the Limited package's lineup. And, AT&T is reportedly getting set to offer the mother of all Mobile TV/cellular video/MEdia Net packages with the “Plus” package. For $30 a month, you'll get all the same goodies that you get with the Basic package, and adds unlimited MEdia Net and Cellular Video.

May 4th is just around the corner, so we won't have too much longer to wait for AT&T to go live with Mobile TV.

Orange iPhoneIt looks like French iPhone hopefuls are next in line to see a drop in the price of current-generation iPhones. Reports are pointing towards Apple working with Orange France to offer subsidies for the iPhone. As it stands, Orange is not granted to offer any buy subsidies on the iPhone, but with the 3G iPhone launch looming, and plenty of iPhone stock remaining, things will likely change.

Apple COO Tim Cook purportedly received Orange executives for a meeting in California to discuss possible price cuts on the iPhone. The introduction of a subsidy for the iPhone will require a reworking of the revenue sharing agreement between Orange and Apple.

But, with iPhone price cuts in the UK and Germany, it would make sense for Apple to give Orange a break and allow them to offer subsidies on the iPhone. Hang in there, France.
