Sprint and Clearwire are combining their WiMAX businesses and plan to create a new company that will go live by the end of the year which will retain the Clearwire name. Intel, Google, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks will be investing $3.2 Billion into this new company and will split 22% of it among themselves. Clearwire will have will have a 27% stake in the new company and Sprint will control the remaining 51%.
All the interesting quotes from all the C level executives involved can be read in the press release here. No word when this network will go live. The fact that Sprint is at the helm makes me a bit … well something tells me this will be the biggest disaster of the upcoming decade.

Philips is reportedly working on an iPhone-like all-touchscreen device. According to Personal computer World China, the still unannounced Xenium X800 will sport the so called “e2e” design, which translates into full edge to edge touchscreen.
The information about the device are scarce at the moment. We know it should come with a WQVGA screen and a powerful battery. We'll watch this closely; in the meantime check out two more images after the jump.

Another day another watch phone. This one, however, comes with a twist that goes beyond somewhat stylish design. The EP2502 is a waterproof watchphone, “world's first” supposedly. Other specs include tri-band (900/1800/1900 mhz) GSM radio, 1.3-inch OLED touchscreen, media player (yes you can watch movies on it), 2 megapixel camera, and a memory card slot. According to the official specs, the battery should deliver about 3 hours of speak and 160 hours of standby time. It costs $299 and is available starting from Might 10th.

A rumor on the street is that the Finnish giant will be announcing its long awaited E71 smartphone tomorrow. The upcoming device builds on top of its predecessors, the E61/E61i models, and has everything the mentioned two smartphones lacked. Aside from the full QWERTY-keyboard, there's a built-in GPS, superior 3.2 megapixels camera, more available RAM, smaller form factor, and the new version of Symbian S60 (3.2). In short, this is one device to look forward to. As a matter of fact, I would call it the best Nokia smartphone — it combines all the multimedia features of the Symbian/S60 platform with business friendly look and feel in a small package.
Let's hope the blogosphere knows what it's speaking about and that tomorrow will see the E71 hitting Nokia's press pages. Stay tuned…

Those of you that craved to organize your thoughts with your Nokia World wide web Tablet while on the go, here's a reason to rejoice. A software engineer from Ukraine Eugene Antimirov ported Labyrinth to the Maemo platform allowing us to mind-map wherever we’re. Sure, you could rely on some of the web-based solutions like MindMeister, but a native application is superior in this case. You may not have an Internet connection everywhere and even if you do, the CPU inside can't handle the complex JavaScript or Flash code of the web-based mind-mapping tools fast enough. At least I couldn't rely on the web-based tools because of the speed.
The bad thing about Maemo port of Labyrinth, though, is that it's still in alpha, meaning some of us might opt to wait a little longer until the application hits version 1.0 and is hence stable enough for heavy use. Or we could just try it out and if it works, we'll go with it.

The Beta 5 version of the iPhone SDK is now out. Unlike the previous release, this one doesn't bring much new to the table. However, tweaks to the developers tools and some bug repairs should be more than enough for any iPhone/iPod Touch developer out there to update.
This fifth beta release of the iPhone SDK includes a complete set of tools, compilers, frameworks, and documentation for creating iPhone OS applications. These tools include the Xcode IDE, and the Instruments analysis tool, among many others. With this software you can develop applications that run on iPhone and iPod touch using the included iPhone Simulator.

It's too bad Motorola hasn't seen fit to bring the Motorola A1600 MING 2 to the US. The FCC has just checked off on the uniquely-designed A1600 MOTOMING 2 handset, which is good news to anyone looking forward to getting their hands on the Motorola clamshell.
The Moto A1600 MING 2 ups the ante on its A1200 MING predecessor with a 3.2 megapixel camera, quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM/EDGE radio, and and alleged WiFi radio, while keeping the MING's characteristic see-through flip-design.
There likely won't be too many MOTOMING 2 handsets floating around The Says, but if you feel like you can't live without one, it's nice to know that the MING 2 will play nice with US frequencies.
We're still looking for a Q2 2008 launch of the Motorola A1600 MING 2, so it won't be too long before we see this handset available through your favorite importer/retailer.

Austrian rag Der Standard is reporting that T-Mobile has confirmed the 3G iPhone for the Austrian market. During a press conference in Vienna, T-Mobile announced that Austria would be one of the first test markets for the next-generation, 3G iPhone. As one of the first worldwide markets to receive the 3G iPhone, Austrians can anticipate to surf the web at the higher data speeds that the 3G iPhone's UMTS/HSDPA data connection will allow.
The next-gen iPhone is expected to launch with flexible pricing plans, which is in line with previous speculation that Apple is changing their business model with the 3G iPhone - no longer sticking to a carrier-locked model and allowing carrier subsidization.
T-Mobile has confirmed through other sources that the 3G iPhone is indeed coming to Austria, but launch date details are still being kept under lock and key.
How soon the 3G iPhone will hit T-Mobile Austria is still unclear. Austria launched the current-generation iPhone through T-Mobile just a couple months ago, so a near-term launch of the 3G iPhone would upstage the current iPhone and potentially upset iPhone customers who pulled the trigger on the first-generation iPhone.

Well, it looks like CDMA network subscribers won't be left out in the cold when RIM goes live with their sleeker BlackBerry 9000. Word has it that RIM is preparing two different BlackBerry 9000 variants - the BlackBerry Javelin and BlackBerry Niagra. The former is the EDGE-based BlackBerry 9000 that we all know and love, while the latter will apparently be the a BlackBerry 9000 variant with EVDO support. Which is to say, the BlackBerry Javelin will launch sporting EDGE and 3G data connectivity for GSM networks and the BlackBerry Niagra will be the handling EVDO Rev. A data for the CDMA side of things.
Both handsets will feature the 480×360 display, massive QWERTY keyboard, 3.2 megapixel camera, BES 5.0 support and of course similar (if not the same) physical dimensions and design. The GSM version of the BlackBerry 9000 (BlackBerry Javelin) will support quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM, GPS, BlackBerry OS 4.6, WiFi, and an ArgonV processor. On the other hand, the CDMA version of the BlackBerry 9000 (BlackBerry Niagra) should hit the market with aGPS, BlackBerry OS 4.7, and Qualcomm MSM7600 processor in tow.
Overall, both devices seem to offer similar feature sets, with the exception of the CDMA BlackBerry 9000 forgoing the GPS variant's WiFi radio in favor of aGPS and BlackBerry OS 4.7. Of course, seeing as how the BlackBerry Niagra is set to launch in Might of 2009 (CDMA subscribers are always last in line), it makes sense that it launches with an updated OS.
We'll be keeping an eye out for more details on the BlackBerry 9000 - and the iPhone-fighting BlackBerry AK. Stay tuned.
