Singapore's SingTel owned Optus, one of Australia's two iPhone carriers, recently stated it will invest a further AU$315 million (US$295 million) in building its HSPA-enabled 3G network. The idea is of course to compete and match Teltra's 99% 3G network coverage and ultimately get more customers.

OptusLast year, Optus announced it will invest AU$500 million into extending its network to 96% of the population, and the latest investment announced will see it add a further 2% coverage. The new sections of the network will operate on 900MHz, allowing it to travel further in rural areas.

Commenting on the announcement, Optus' CEO Paul O'Sullivan stated, “With this significant expansion we will be the only mobile carrier capable of challenging the incumbent's (Telstra's) network reach.”

The country's third-placed operator, Vodafone Australia, has also committed to rolling-out HSPA to 95% of the population by year-end.

AdMob Mobile Analytics

AdMob has announced AdMob Mobile Analytics to deliver a “comprehensive solution for understanding user behavior and makes it easy to measure the usage of mobile websites and advertising campaigns.”

AdMob Mobile Analytics, which runs independent of the company's other services, can be set up in less than 10 minutes and does not require advertising spend or publishing activity with the company's flagship product, the AdMob mobile advertising network. AdMob Analytics will offer businesses a free, easy solution to maximize commerce, advertising and content on the mobile Internet and to improve the overall user experience.

Similarly to other, “desktop web” products, users of the AdMob Analytics suite will be able to track site performance metrics such as very special visitors, duration of visit, page performance, as well as user details including geography, operator and device specifics. Additionally, AdMob Mobile Analytics will also provide visibility into a site's sources of traffic including search engines, direct traffic and advertising — as well as track conversion of the specific events and actions that the campaign seeks to drive, thus enabling measurement of campaign performance.

Microsoft to bring Windows Live Mobile to BlackBerrysMicrosoft and Research In Motion (RIM) announced an agreement to provide Microsoft Windows Live services on BlackBerry smartphones. As a result, BlackBerry smartphone owners will be able to access Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Hotmail by simply entering their Windows Live E-Mail address and password once.

To put it in other words, if you own a BlackBerry you'll be able to use the original BlackBerry-native Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger client, as well as get your Hotmail email pushed to your smartphone.

Both parties seem satisfied with the deal, with RIM's VP of Corporate Marketing, Mark Guibert saying, “Our relationship with Microsoft and the addition of Windows Live services to BlackBerry smartphones helps us build on that strategy for our customers.” On the other end, Microsoft's VP of the Mobile Services organization, Brian Arbogast said, “Over 430 million people around the world rely on Windows Live to stay in touch. Our collaboration with RIM will enable BlackBerry smartphone customers to take full advantage of Windows Live, whether at work or on the go.”

Windows Live services for BlackBerry smartphones are expected to be available beginning this summer with support for multiple languages. Ways of distribution or costs weren't unveiled, though.

HuaweiChina-based Huawei Technologies Co. is considering the sale of a huge portion of its mobile devices division to a foreign investor. Apparently, the idea behind the move is to get additional money and enter the North American market.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the sale is at an early stage of discussions and Huawei plans to invite strategic investors and private-equity companies later this month. The end result could be that a foreign investor end up owning the majority in the business, though, presently that's not clear. If something like this happens, we may see Huawei emerging at the top of the North American telecommunications equipment market. We'll certainly watch this closely…

T-Mobile USA delays handsetsNot that anyone is actually waiting for the Motorola Z6w to launch on T-Mobile, but if you were looking for a WiFi-enabled Motorola Z6w slider to put in your pocket, think about your hopes and dreams dashed into oblivion. T-Mobile USA has reportedly nixed their plans to release the sleek Motorola Z6w slider due to “testing issues.” The handset was slated to launch on June 23.

But, things are looking superior for fans of the Nokia 5310 Xpress Music and Nokia 5610 Xpress Music. While the two cellphones from Espoo are delayed, T-Mobile is still going to launch the music-centric duo in the next couple months. The Nokia 5310 Xpress Music should be going live in early June, with the Nokia 5610 Xpress Music seeing some official network-duty in early July.

The question is, will the new Nokia Xpress Music 5610 handset sport 3G radios compatible with T-Mobile's 1700Mhz AWS spectrum? Here's to hoping that T-Mobile has delayed the device launches to prepare them for 3G duty on the carrier's new 3G network.
