If the usually well-informed Boy Genius is on point with an allegedly leaked inventory document, everyone's favorite big-box retailer will be taking shipment of the Sidekick Gekko and Sidekick LX Tony Hawk limited edition handsets on July 27, with sales presumably kicking off same day or shortly thereafter.
The Sidekick Gekko will be bringing back the changeable face-plates and entry-level price-point that the Sidekick iD introduced not too long ago. And, with the limited edition Sidekick LX Tony Hawk getting some retail love around the same time, HipTop fans are going to have a field day some time this (or next) month.

But, it doesn't stop there. Push email-loving, RIM fans will be happy to hear that Ideal Purchase will also be taking inventory shipments of the BlackBerry Curve Sunset alongside those new Sidekick offerings (July 27). The BlackBerry Curve Sunset offers yet another color scheme for all you BlackBerry addicts looking to change things up a bit. We're not sure which carrier the BlackBerry Curve Sunset will be offered with, but seeing as how T-Mobile's Sidekick wares are hitting Best Purchase like there's no tomorrow, we'd say the BlackBerry Curve Sunset is destined for T-Mo's airwaves.
Of course, as with all rumors, take this with a grain of salt (or whatever other grains you take). But, the timeframe coincides quite well with our expectations for a mid-July release of the Sidekick LX Tony Hawk.

There's no doubt that the iPhone has redefined the mobile industry. With a design aesthetic that's second to none, Apple and Steve Jobs are usually credited for making the iPhone as sleek and sexy as it is. But, the story behind the iPhone's iconic design points to industrial designer Jonathan Ive as the true genius behind the game-changing design.
The Mobile Data Association, a UK company that gives recognition to “those UK companies and individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the uptake and success of mobile data over the last 12 month,” has chosen Jonathan Ive for their 2008 MDA Personal Accomplishment Award.
Ive serves as Apple's Senior Vice President of Industrial Design, and his hand in crafting the iPhone has earned him the MDA Personal Achievement Award for having “completely redefined the mobile phone as we know it.” With time-tested classic designs like the original iMac, iPod, and iMac G4 tucked under his design-belt, Ive already had some serious design-experience. And, now the iPhone's oft-copied design philosophy is starting to be recognized among Ive's previous iconic designs.
While the iPhone may not be the ideal handset on the market or even a good fit with some mobile users, there's no denying that Apple iPhone “sets the bar very high for all present and future competitors and as such, is shaking the mobile phone industry. We look forward to seeing Ive's design innovation continuing to challenge the mobile world.”

Leave it to the Germans to push the fore-front of innovation in the supermarket. Apparently not satisfied with pushing innovative technologies and design in the automotive field, Germans at the country's “Future Store” supermarket have come up with an interesting way to shop for your groceries. With a few clicks of your mobile phone's camera, Future Store wants shoppers to take photos of items' barcodes.
Just snap photos of the barcodes on all your groceries as you load up the cart. When it comes time to check-out, all the barcodes that you just recorded are tallied up and consolidated in to a barcode. An automated kiosk will take care of scanning the barcode on your cellphone's display, and prompt you for payment - via cash, credit card, fingerprint, and even NFC in the near future.
Now, if only those Germans could find an innovative way to do away with the shopping cart altogether. Yea, we're that lazy.

Who woulda thunk it? Canada has just proved to be the first North American market to offer the hottest new touchscreen flavor from HTC. Our favorite Taiwanese ODM-turned global smartphone-manufacturing powerhouse has finally made good on their promise to bring their highly acclaimed HTC Touch Diamond to the North American market. Unfortunately for us Stateside, Canada will be the first North American market to show off the HTC Touch Diamond.
The full-body touchscreen, sleek design, and slim-waistline of the HTC Touch Diamond aren't going to be exclusive European treats for much longer. HTC is bringing the HTC Touch Diamond to Telus later this summer.
A $149.99 admission price (with 3-year contract, of course) gets you all the Windows Mobile 6.1-powered, 2.8-inch VGA display (complementing the new TouchFLO 3D UI), GPS, WiFi, and 3 megapixel camera goodness that you can handle. Oh, and EVDO Rev. A data connectivity rounds out the HTC Touch Diamond's massively impressive feature-set - ensuring that you're never more than a button click and a few seconds away from accessing all the web's knowledge-base.
And, with Telus offering a $15 unlimited email and IM (instant message) data package alongside a $30 unlimited internet, email, and IM data add-on, the HTC Touch Diamond will likely be ready to throw down with Bell Mobility's Samsung Instinct. Of course, there's the iPhone 3G hitting Rogers next week, but with a cheaper data plan and that glorious VGA display on the HTC Touch Diamond, Rogers is going to have to work hard to keep customers interested in the iPhone.
We can't wait to get our hands on the HTC Touch Diamond. VGA, WiFi, GPS, and TouchFLO 3D? Yes, please.
Update: EVDO is definitely more befitting Telus' network. Edited.

It looks like Telstra and Vodafone are no longer the only iPhone 3G carriers down-unda. With Telstra recently announcing that they'll be offering the iPhone 3G to anyone looking for a Vodafone-alternative, Optus has thrown their hat in to the ring with the announcement that they'll be hocking iPhone 3G's to Aussies as well.
Optus will be offering both pre-paid and post-paid iPhone 3G plans, giving them a hands up on the post-paid competition. But, as you'd expect from non-contract and pre-paid handset offerings, Optus will be asking a hefty chunk of change for a pre-paid iPhone 3G - to the tune of $729 and $849 for an 8GB or 16GB iPhone 3G, respectively. Optus pre-paid offers wireless minute re-charges starting at $30, with bundled data starting with the $40 Turbo Cap pre-paid re-charge tiers.

On the post-paid side of Optus's iPhone 3G rate plans, we are seeing Optus offering their iPhone 3G handsets for free - sort of. While Optus won't be offering a subsidized up-front payment for an iPhone 3G, Optus will essentially finance the handset throughout the life of the one- or tw0-year contract. The carrier will ask customers for a monthly “handset repayment” fee ranging from $0 to $61, depending on which “yes” Cap Plan is chosen and whether the iPhone 3G in question is boasting 8GB or 16GB of storage. And, for those Optus customers looking to spend at least $79 every month, Optus is offering free iPhone 3G handsets.

And, not to be left out of the post-paid iPhone 3G-race, Telstra has announced their own iPhone 3G pricing schedule. Starting July 11, Telstra will offer the iPhone 3G on their Next G network for $279 (8GB iPhone 3G) or $399 (16GB iPhone 3G) - with 2-year contract.
Telstra's Next G iPhone 3G plans start at $30 per month, and subscribers with the $80 rate plan will be offered a free 8GB iPhone 3G. Telstra subscribers can get a 16GB iPhone 3G handset with the $100 Next G iPhone 3G plan.

The iPhone has already started to bring mobile gaming back from the plateaued purgatory that it's been trapped in for the past few years. Big display, accelerometers, graphics acceleration, and multi-touch make for an immersive gaming experience that serves up a feast for your eyes.
Check out this here video of Crash Bandicoot Nirto Kart running on an iPhone. Controls are apparently affected through the iPhone's tilt-sensors, while the multi-touch display is relegated primarily to showing off all those eye-candy graphics.
Crash Bandicoot coming to an AppStore or jailbroken iPhone near you? We can't wait.
Thanks, Zyl!

It's no surprise that Sprint's hottest-selling smartphone would eventually make it to the Great White North. The Samsung Instinct's GPS and mobile TV-laden feature-set is a sure-fire hit that's not going to be satisfied with just blowing the doors off the US CDMA market.
Bell Mobility has just confirmed that our friends to the North will be getting their iPhone-fighting fix soon enough. With the launch of the Bell Samsung Instinct on-track for an A ugust 8th release, the Samsung Instinct is poised to go up against GSM heavyweights like the iPhone 3G and BlackBerry Bold 9000. Bell will be offering the Samsung Instinct at a subsidized price-point similar to what we see here in The Says - $149.95 with a three-year contract, $249.95 on a two-year contract or $399.95 with a one-year contract. Of course, Canadians with deeper pockets and a more significant aversion to contracts can get their Samsung Instinct free and clear for the retail price of $449.95.
The full-body touchscreen and and full-HTML web browser, not to mention the integrated GPS hardware, are prone to be key selling points as the Bell-branded Samsung Instinct gets ready to take on the touchscreen competition.
Adel Bazerghi, Vice President, Products for Bell Mobility said, “We are thrilled to offer Canadians this beautifully designed and intelligent device. Accessing the Internet, listening to downloaded music or satellite radio, watching TV or using it as a GPS system… Data pricing plans available with the Samsung Instinct will offer also exceptional value and let clients take full advantage of Bell Mobility’s wide range of data services.”
It sure is good to see at least one Canadian wireless carrier offering decent data rates on a handset that's meant to surf the internet with abandon. Bell Mobility is offering a $10 Unlimited Mobile Browser add-on to any qualifying voice plan. While Rogers' customers will be forking over upwards of $115 for a combined voice and data plan with unjust data transfer caps, Bell subscribers will no doubt be surfing those intertubes without a care for data limits.
