iPhone AppStore

It's not just the iPhone 3G people wait, it's also the long awaited AppStore. In case you already haven't jailbroken your iPhone/iPod Touch (shame on you), you certainly have reasons to rejoice as you will finally be able to try out some of the native apps on your beloved handset/media player.

According to the man himself, the AppStore will launch with “more than 500″ applications. About 25% of these will be free and 90% of those for sale will cost $9.99 or less! On a separate note, The New York Times reports that one third of all apps will be games!

In an interview to USA Today, Jobs said this is the biggest launch of his career. Amen to that. Patience was never my virtue…

LG Decoy Limited EditionIt seems Verizon is confident people will like the LG Decoy - the phone with removable Bluetooth Headset on the back. Hence, they will be launching the special limited edition of the device that will keep all the good things of the original Decoy, but will also add a Bluetooth Desktop Charger with integrated Speaker in the box. The end result is $20 more costly device ($199 with a contract), which again makes sure you always have a Bluetooth headset with you, no matter how forgettable you happen to be.

Nothing's confirmed at this stage, but something tells us we'll see Verizon going out with this sooner rather than later…

JoikuSpot Premium EditionJoikusoft, the folks behind the free application that allows users of Symbian S60 powered smartphones to turn their 3G connection into a hotspot, has unveiled the new JoikuSpot Premium Edition, which adds corporate intraweb (VPN) and email protocol support to the mix, allowing “business level use of the solution.”

Instead of targeting consumers, the Premium Edition seems primarily made for Operators, OEMs and Corporates, though individuals can also buy it (at least the official release suggests so). That being said, the application is fully customizable for the licensee branding and feature configuration needs.

Before I let you go, I need to add my two cents. I've nothing against the idea of mobile operators allowing their customers to turn their 3G connection into a hotspot. However, I like the individual license to use my 3G connection the way I want to. Just give me the unlimited data plan and let me find ways of using it. Sure, that involves turning carriers into dumb pipes, but at some point that’ll happen nevertheless, enjoy it or not.

Anyway, to grab the new JoikuSpot Premium Edition, hop over to also newly unveiled JoikuShop. The application costs 15 EUR and is worth every penny.

In what seems as an effort to return some good faith in Germany following the closure of the
Bochum facilities, Nokia is teaming up with the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and the City of Bochum to “stimulate growth, create new jobs and generate investment for Bochum and the neighbouring cities.”

Nokia loves BochumThe main elements of the “Growth for Bochum” include:

  • A proactive international campaign to attract suitable investors to Bochum and the surrounding region.
  • The establishment of an “Entrepreneur Centre” in Bochum.
  • The creation of a Chair at the Bochum University or a similar mechanism to ensure the commercialization of scientific research.
  • Finding a suitable buyer or investor for the Nokia facilities in Bochum.
  • Financial support for the surrounding region of Bochum.

The Finnish giant will support these measures by contributing the sum of 20 million EUR plus the net proceeds from the sale of Nokia's production facility and property in Bochum, while NRW will contribute a co-investment in the amount of 20 million EUR.

Nokia and NRW have also discussed the issue of the subsidies paid to the company in the late 1990s and both parties now think about this issue closed.

Kudos to Nokia! Yes it's a PR move but what they did seems so much more than it was necessary. A good faith is shown, money is on the table and I'm sure German consumers, especially the citizens of Bochum, will appreciate Nokia's move.

Innovelis BudFits

This one's for all of your that enjoy running, cycling or any other type of exercise. You certainly noticed that your earbuds fall out from time to time — that's in case you're using a “default” pair of earbuds that came with you mobile phone. Thanks to the neat product from Inovelis called BudFits that won't happen any more.

With all the hype surrounding Apple's products, Inovelis is naturally pushing BudFits to the iPhone and iPod users, primarily. There release clearly states:

Constructed of soft, flexible rubber, BudFits snap onto Apple earbuds and then wrap over the top of the ear. In doing so, they ensure iPod and iPhone earbuds will not fall out and also maximize user comfort by eliminating the need to wedge earbuds into the ear canal to keep the earbuds in place. BudFits quickly snap onto earbuds to provide extra support and comfort, yet they have the ability to be easily removed for times when extra support and comfort is not necessary.

However, from what I saw, I'm sure earbuds from other manufacturers will work just as well. In case you do jog often, you might want to check out BudFits website for more information. The question remains, though, are BudFits worth 9 bucks? You be the judge.

HTC Touch Dual in CDMA form for SprintFollowing on the CDMA HTC Touch Dual's appearance on the FCC's website, as the HTC NEON400, we're hearing that Sprint is lined up to offer the HTC Touch Dual on September 2nd.

A leaked Sprint document shows that the No. 3 US wireless carrier is going to offer an “HTC 6950″ during the first week of September. Given that the HTC Touch was originally listed as the HTC 6900 of Sprint's inventory list, this new HTC 6950 could very well be the HTC Touch Dual in CDMA guise. Of course, take all this at face value - especially considering that the July 27th launch date listed on this leaked document for the Palm Treo 800w has been revised for July 13th.

But, even if the HTC 6950 doesn't turn out to be the HTC Touch Dual, Sprint's got a busy summer schedule ahead of them. We're seeing a Blue variant of the LG Rumor, the Palm Treo 800w, the Motorola RAZR/Vegas VE20, various data card refreshes, Sanyo's Katana Eclipse, Samsung's M220 and M320, Motorola Renegade V950, and Motorola i365 all slated for release in the coming months.
Allowed, most of Sprint's upcoming lineup, save for the Palm Treo 800w and HTC 6950, aren't exactly high-end handsets, but there's something to be said for putting the customer's at the top of the priority-list - which is Sprint's new tack on their wireless business.

The iPhone 3G will be launching at 8am local time on July 11. And, as soon as sales go live, the US is going to see a tremendous shift in the smartphone market. According to a new survey from ChangeWave Research, consumers are looking more toward the iPhone 3G than either the RIM-made BlackBerry lineup or any smartphone offerings from Palm. So much so, in fact, that the iPhone 3G could have a “tsunami-like” impact on the US smartphone market.

While the iPhone 3G currently ranks as the third most popular smartphone in the US with 11% market share, compared to RIM's 42% and Palm's 14% share, ChangeWave recommends that the iPhone could skyrocket to at least second place with the iPhone 3G.

Apple iPhone 3G to outpace Palm and RIM in smartphone segment

Surveying 3,567 consumers following Apple's June 9th iPhone 3G announcement, ChangeWave found that 56% of consumers planning to purchase a smartphone in the next 90 days are looking to fill their needs with Apple's next-generation iPhone 3G. Of the respondents, 23% plan to get a RIM-made BlackBerry handset, while only 3% of smartphone enthusiasts have a Palm device in mind.

The BlackBerry Bold will likely hold up RIM's side of the smartphone market, while the Palm Treo 800w will be giving Palm-fans a does of new hardware. But, with the iPhone 3G-fighting BlackBerry Thunder reportedly delayed until the end of 2008 due to developmental struggles, how will RIM fare against Apple in the US?

If these figures project reliably in to real-world consumer intentions, we'll be seeing twice as many new iPhone 3G handsets hit the market over the next few months than we will any BlackBerry handset.

ChangeWave Research

Note: the chart focuses on those respondents indicating interest in smartphones
