The unknown Motorola clamshell has been spotted at the FCC website. The so called Motorola “Ischia” is a device which can hardly excite anyone and will probably land on carriers' pre-paid offerings. Bluetooth and EDGE are included in the mix and that's about it. It even lacks GSM radio that works on 850 Mhz. The more words I write, the more I don't understand why we care about at all.
It's a slow news day so far, but we need to push something out, nonetheless. Just ignore this one, will ya?

The new GPS hardware in the iPhone 3G seems to be having some trouble when not connected to the AT&T 3G network. iPhone Atlas reports that some users are complaining of inaccurate GPS positioning when the 3G data setting (Settings>General>Network>Enable 3G) option is switched to “ON.”
The iPhone 3G uses aGPS (assisted GPS), which means that the cellular network assists in positioning the handset, giving the GPS hardware less number-crunching to deal with. That means you get super-fast GPS lock-on times. But, it seems that some iPhones are getting conflicting data from the 3G data network and their built-in GPS receivers, leading to incorrect GPS positioning.
So, for those of you with wonky GPS positioning on the iPhone 3G, try this fix:
- Navigate to Settings>General>Network>Enable 3G and toggle to “OFF”
- Locate yourself using the iPhone 3G's GPS receiver
- Navigate to Settings>General>Network>Enable 3G and toggle to “ON”
You should now have accurate GPS positioning information. Leave a comment if this worked or didn't work for you.

It's that time again. The Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM update is again out and about for all you WinMo fans to like. Except this time around, it's an official WM6.1 ROM straight from HTC itself.
After seeing more cooked, unofficially official, and leaked Windows Mobile 6.1 ROMs floating around the intertubes than we care to count, HTC and Sprint have finally gotten their WM6.1 update posted and ready to usher your Sprint HTC Touch or Sprint HTC Mogul in to the Windows Mobile 6.1 era.

The Windows Mobile 6.1 update for the Sprint HTC Touch brings with it support for EVDO Rev. A, an Opera web browser, on-screen QWERTY keyboard, and enhanced GPS via Sprint Navigation. Find the new Sprint HTC Touch Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM here.
The Sprint HTC Mogul's Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM enables Sprint TV, EVDO Rev. A, Sprint Navigation, and a Task Manager to force-quit certain annoying Windows Mobile applications. Find the new Sprint HTC Mogul Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM here.
As with all ROM updates, backup all your data before flashing to the new ROM - you will lose ALL of it. And, follow the directions. Paperweights are nice, but not when they cost a few C-notes.

As great as the iPhone and iPhone 3G platforms are at playing media, surfing the web, mobile blogging, and even finding the nearest Starbucks in your area, there's a critical shortcoming in its otherwise superb UI. Cut-and-paste functionality has been a sticking point that has drawn the iPhone's Mac OS much criticism and ire from fans and haters alike. But, until now, the absence of cut/paste features has been fairly manageable.
Any potential pieces of information that Apple foresaw users would need to transfer or interact with (email addresses, phone numbers, hyperlinks) were automatically detected and linked to an action that Apple reasoned would be the most likely path taken by an iPhone user. Phone numbers were automatically linked to the iPhone's phone application. Tapping an email address would bring up a new email message in the iPhone's Mail application. Hyperlinks would lead to the target webpage within Safari. And so on.
But, with the iPhone now being developed en masse and iPhone applications widely available through the AppStore, the need for cut-and-paste functionality is greater than ever. As iPhone Central's Dan Moren points out, applications like the just-launched Wordpress iPhone application would benefit to no end from a working cut/paste feature on the iPhone. Embedding an external URL in to a blog post is simple enough when you can copy and paste the too-long-to-remember address in to the post's text. But, without any way to copy the URL, aside from manually jotting it down on a piece of paper (or seriously testing your memory), embedding a URL in to a Wordpress post turns in to an exercise in tediousness.
Of course, there are solutions to getting commonly copied information transferred to another application. Data URLs grant for rudimentary and buggy cut/paste within Safari. The iPhone Flickr-browser Exposure lets you export a link to a Flickr picture straight to your Twiterrific Twitter client. Other applications have built-in browsers to allow for swift browsing of embedded hyperlinks without having to memorize and input the address in to Safari. Still, these are workarounds, not real solutions.
Will Apple see fit to bring cut-and-paste functionality to the iPhone? According to Apple's Greg Joswiak, cut/paste is quite low on the iPhone UI developmental priority list - taking a back-seat to turn-by-turn GPS navigation. We're torn between wanting a full-featured GPS navigation solution and a working cut-and-paste feature on the iPhone.
I would rather that Apple concentrate on bringing cut/paste to the field ahead of enhanced GPS features. But, what state you, dear readers? Superior GPS or cut-n-paste?

We've heard it all before. Congress, presumably responding to disgruntled constituents' complaints of ridiculous taxes on their cellphone bill, has previously proposed freezing new wireless taxes from being added to your monthly wireless subscription costs. But, without bi-partisan support, the Republican-backed bill promptly died on Congress's floor.
But, with the economy being what it is, and wireless billing practices under renewed scrutiny, a new bill has been proposed that would ban any new wireless taxes from being instituted in the next five years. The new bill, put forth by Senators Ron Wyden and Olympia Snowe, would declare a five-year moratorium on cellphone taxes from being added to the ever-growing list of say and local wireless taxes that many cellphone users are used to seeing at the bottom of their monthly bill.
“Americans are being hit hard with rising costs for gas, health care, and food for the dinner table. Americans need to know that their cellphone bills won’t be the next cost to spiral out of control,” said Wyden. “Keeping our telecom infrastructure cutting-edge keeps our economy moving and helps the millions of Americans and businesses who depend on affordable wireless services.”
And, it seems even big-dog wireless carriers are in support of the new bill. Rather than helping the customer with lower rates and reasonable SMS text messaging fees, Verizon Wireless “applaud this proposed legislation and commend Senators Wyden and Snowe for this important effort to make wireless services more inexpensive for American consumers.” Sounds like that recent

At first glance, using Microsoft's Windows Live Mesh service on an iPhone seems a bit counter-intuitive. Apple has MobileMe to compete with Live Mesh's cloud-based storage and synchronization service. And, let's not forget that using an Apple iPhone running Mac OS with a Windows Live service arguably aimed at Windows and Windows Mobile devices is sort of blasphemous (regardless of which camp, Windows Mobile or Mac, you take into account yourself aligned with).
But, with Apple continuing to muddle their MobileMe brand with a botched launch and ongoing billing and push email stumbles, Microsoft's Windows Live Mesh is starting to look all that much more attractive.
As such, it's a treat to see Live Mesh up and running on an iPhone. Kevin Tofel from jkOnTheRun managed to snap some screenshots of the Live Mesh service's mobile-portal, intended for Windows Mobile devices, working on the iPhone. The Live Mesh team recently rolled out mobile access features for Live Mesh, and Tofel took a decidedly different tack on the service and gave the Live Mesh mobile portal a whirl on his iPhone.
For now, Live Mesh on the iPhone allows you to view your Live Mesh Desktop (the cloud) where all files are stored and synchronized. Unfortunately, there's no option to upload files from the iPhone - but file uploads are possible with a Windows Mobile device (of course).
If MobileMe fails to deliver on its promise of seamless push-data services, Microsoft might find themselves in a position to offer iPhone owners a true data synchronization service. Even if it was intended for Windows Mobile devices…

Ever wanted to change the wallpaper on your iPhone? Sure you did. Few images that come preloaded with the iPhone/iPod Touch may be enough for some people, but there are certainly others who look for more options.

If you like the idea of changing the background image on your iPhone/iPod Touch, you might want to take into account visiting Listropolis website, which has compiled around 50 stunning wallpapers. Expect a mix of some great nature, Apple-related and miscellaneous images for use as wallpapers.
Apparently their list is pulled from the iPhone Wallpapers group on Flickr, which has over 6,000 items in it…
Enough talk. Here's the link to Listropolis page with all the wallpapers. I'm sure you'll find something you like there.
