The Xbox 360 is still trying to cement itself as one of the leaders in the current generation of gaming, yet there’s already speak about its follow-up, the Xbox 720.

Interviewed in the latest Major Nelson podcast, Microsoft Games Studios chief, Phil Spencer explained that the resurgence of the E3 of old means Microsoft will need to step up its game this year and possibly discuss more than its short-term plans.

“The last two E3s at least, if I use that as a proxy for what’s coming, we’ve talked a lot about what’s coming in the next five to six months after E3, and we’ve had some pressure that maybe we want to think a little broader about what we want to say at E3, a little further out in the future,” he said in the interview.

“I came out of an E3 planning meeting just about an hour ago, and we were looking at some of the plans for the future and things that we might want to tease, and it’s very exciting,” he continued. “There’s a lot of stuff on the docket, and maybe we’ll break the bank a little bit and speak about things that are further out, which will hopefully get the community excited.”

What sort of things will Microsoft discuss? The company isn’t saying. But you can bet that if it really wants to discuss the future, the Xbox 720 will highlight that discussion.

If it does, what should we anticipate from Microsoft? Surely, the company won’t want to show its hand too early–the next generation is probably at least two years away–but it still wants to lay the gauntlet down and reassure consumers that even though the Xbox 360 is a fine product to buy now, the Xbox 720 will be the ideal console of the next generation.

Great. But what about the Blu-ray issue?

Don't panic! Age of Conan still coming to Xbox 360! screenshot

Put down that razorblade, take that noose from the ceiling, and for Heaven’s sake stop strangling your first born. Funcom’s Age of Conan is still heading to the Xbox 360, despite the company’s current staff cuts. PHEW! PHEEEEEEW!

“The Xbox 360 game will also contain most, if not all of the content and improvements that have been made to the Personal computer version of the game,” assures Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas. “… “The work with improving and expanding Age of Conan continues with relentless force, and we look forward to introducing a number of great updates in the months ahead.”

Aas also confirmed that Funcom’s other MMO project, The Secret World, is still on track, as well as planned expansion into the so-called “casual” games market. That’s nice.

Xbox 360 version of TF2 set to get 'massive' update [update] screenshot

Recently Valve announced that the Xbox 360 version of Team Fortress 2 (packaged in the Orange Box collection) is receiving a “massive” update that’ll “include pretty much everything” that Valve has “shipped on the Computer in the last year.” That includes classes, levels, and weapons upgrades that 360 owners haven’t been able to touch thus far.

The posting on the official TF2 blog cautions that no date has been confirmed for the content, but we’re sure plenty of players are excited about their forgotten console port of the popular multiplayer game. In addition to the Xbox 360 news, the posting also provides information on an abundance of content for the PC version that should roll out “within the next few days.”

Players will be able to upgrade Teleporters and Dispensers to level 3, as well as recharge their cloaking capability as a Spy by picking up stray ammo. Valve also informed readers that the next huge class pack will feature the Scout. Last, but not least, Valve will be porting some of their engine improvements from Left 4 Dead into TF2 to ensure that players have an easier time building turrets outside of spawn points.

[Thanks Scary Womanizing Pig Mask!]

[Update: The PC patch came out this day. You can view a list of all the improvements over at the official Steam website.]
