Mac Mini

The best Mac on the market

(Credit: Apple)

Some might disagree with my sentiment that the Mac Mini is the best Apple computer on the market, but as an owner of practically each Mac known to man, I think I have the ability to say, without any reservation, that the MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac Pro don’t hold a candle to the small, yet versatile Mac Mini.

And that’s exactly why I was extremely pleased to read the rumor that Apple may be updating the Mac Mini at Macworld next month.

Apple has not confirmed that rumor, and all reports are pure speculation, based on circumstantial evidence. But who cares? If Apple decides to keep the Mac Mini, it makes perfect sense for the company to update it at Macworld, since it hasn’t seen a refresh in quite some time. And with the economy the way it is, I think Apple wants to make its cheapest Mac an even more attractive personal for those who are on a budget.

Besides pricing, the Mac Mini offers the ideal value of any Mac on the market. State what you will about the power of the Mac Pro or the versatility of the MacBook, but I simply don’t think any other Mac compares to the Mac Mini for the average consumer, who doesn’t care about video editing but wants an extremely versatile machine that can double as a set-top box, media server, or a casual companion in the living room.

Original Halo on sale for 600 MS Points, should be cheaper screenshot

Halo: Combat Evolved has been slashed in half as this weeks deal on Xbox LIVE. The game is now going for 600 MS Points and is a must get for any Halo fan that doesn’t own the original game. Especially since I think it’s the ideal Halo game in the franchise.

So, why do I think Halo: CE should be cheaper? Microsoft milked the hell out of the original game. After a game sells over 400,000 copies within the first nine months of release, a game is supposed to become a Platinum Hit and sell for $19.99. Halo didn’t become a Platinum Hit until years after its release. In fact, Halo 2 didn’t even become a Platinum Hit until just this past year, months after Halo 3 came out.

600 MS Points ($7.50) should be the actual price instead of a one-week sale price. Oh well, there’s always piracy I suppose.

Velvet Assassin busts out the sexy night dress, nobody complains screenshot

“From day one the developers at Replay Studios knew they didn’t want to simply sensationalize one of the most tragic wars in human history, but to give gamers one of the first true-to-life experiences,” says Sandbox Strategy of Velvet Assassin. With that in mind, let’s all achieve and maintain a semi-on as we drool over pictures of a pretend girl in a nightie!

The night dress is one of several outfits that Nazi-bustin’ assassin Violet will have to don as she carries out her mission behind enemy lines. The costumes we have to show today include a pilot outfit, sneaking suit and, even sexier than the nightie, a Nazi officer uniform. Woof woof.

Beyond the jump is an explanation of each outfit, courtesy of Sandbox Strat. In the meantime, I am going to work on this semi-on and patiently wait for the game. It’s generating quite the buzz in the Destructoid staff room. Can’t wait to see what all the fuss is about.

Ladybird Galaxy screenshot

In our Totem review, we discussed how prolific puzzle games are on the Xbox 360’s Community Games channel, but if there’s one thing even more popular among budding indie developers, it’s the shoot ‘em up. It’s simple to throw an endless swarm of enemies at a path of bullets, but just like with puzzlers, only the outstanding will have a chance.

Ladybird Galaxy shares many things in common with a shoot ‘em up, except for one issue — there isn’t really much shooting at all. Despite the same perspective, layout and look, something far more passive is at play, something akin to Pac-Man in a Geometry Wars universe. That sounds strange.

Intermittent beeps on my MacBook started a couple of days ago. There are two types of beeps – one short and faint, the other longer and louder. The sound comes from the right side of the keyboard (and not from the speaker – this was verified by muting the output level of the speaker). The longer and louder tone is identical to the tone the Superdrive makes upon startup. There is no disk…
