Mistwalker to cancel third project thanks to the economy screenshot

This “economic crisis” business is funny when it happens to morons who put too much on their credit card and like spending money they don’t have, but when it affects Mistwalker, developer of arguably the ideal RPG of 2008, I start to give a crap.

AQ Interactive has announced that the third of Hironobu Sakaguchi’s planned Xbox 360 titles, Cry On, has been canceled. Cry On was an action RPG with a Nobuo Uematsu soundtrack and character designs courtesy of Kimihiko Fujisaka. The Lost Odyssey studio was to work with Cavia, but the game’s publisher no longer considers Cry On a wise investment.

Two free Springsteen tracks coming to Guitar Hero World Tour this January screenshot

While only some of you may love Bruce Springsteen, it’s hard to argue with free stuff.

This January, in conjunction with the release of Springsteen’s new album and his Super Bowl half-time performance, Activision will be offering up two free tracks for Guitar Hero World Tour.

Ninja Blade demo announced for Japan. Hope they like QTEs screenshot

If you are one of the three people interested in From Software’s Ninja Blade, you’ll be keen to learn that a demo has been announced. It’s only for Japanese Xbox Live members at the moment, but a demo for we filthy round eyes is sure to be imminent.

Set to launch on December 29, the demo will comprise of what looks like the section I played in Tokyo, feating thirty seconds of action spliced with five minutes of barely interactive quick-time-events.

Metacritic's best and worst games of 2008 screenshot

Metacritic might have made headlines this year for the ridiculous fanboy turf wars that have gone on with user reviews, but I find the site to be a generally useful resource when charting how well a game is doing with the press. At least, it’s good to see how much the press likes to overrate things based on hype more than a game’s merit.

Butcher Bay sold 'purely on word of mouth,' better than word of foot screenshot

It’s no secret that Starbreeze and Tigon Studios’ Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay had less-than-stellar sales. According to Tigon head honcho Ian Stevens, the reasons for the game’s lackluster performance are varied. Stevens recently told CVG that when Butcher Bay debuted consumers weren’t large on Vin Diesel and were highly skeptical of a film property translating well as a videogame.

But what success it did have was the direct result of gamers speaking to each other. From the interview:

It wasn’t until the game got out there and was reviewed that people came back around to it. So we sold purely on word of mouth. So we kind of have that out there now and Starbreeze has gone and done another game that’s been really well received. So I think that gamers genuinely are going to give us a better shot this time around.

He also mentioned that Vivendi’s lack of marketing dollars might have impacted the sales. Money, as we have found through thorough research, has the ability to make anything look good. We submit this picture of Madonna as evidence.

Bungie shows off new screens from the Mythic Map Pack screenshot

Last week, Bungie teased one brand-new screenshot from the Mythic Map Pack coming out next year along side Halo Wars. More screenshots were promised for the week of Christmas and they delivered a very nice holiday treat for Halo fans.

The gallery above contains mostly new images from two of the Mythic Map Pack maps, Orbital and Assembly. Of the two, Assembly looks to be the most fun, as the map is out in the open. Nothing is more satisfying than using the Gravity Hammer to knock a guy off of a map in Halo 3.

Are any of you planning on getting the new maps? Personally, I’m going to wait for Halo: ODST instead and get the new maps then.
