News flash: Consoles use electricity, could be lessened if turned off
Posted by admin in Gaming
A report released by the National Resources Defense Council states that videogame consoles suck up one billion dollars worth of energy annually. Putting a face on that number is easy. The 16 billion kilowatt-hours charging up the $1 billion tab equals the amount of electricity used by the people of sunny San Diego within the same timeframe.
The NRDC urges concerned videogame players (you are concerned now, by the way) to use the auto-shutdown features on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 already has a nifty shutdown feature out of the box dubbed the “Red Ring of Death” by enthusiasts and a “godsend” by environmental activists.
At the end of the day the report really says nothing other than videogame players play videogames and ultimately their hardware sucks up energy. This energy could have been put to better use, like electrifying a duck-filled pond in order to watch a feather explosion.

Resident Evil 5 split-screen co-op demo reinforces need to buy two copies
Posted by admin in Gaming
Good news: Capcom’s Resident Evil 5 cooperative gameplay mode will support split-screen play so that two gamers can play from one television. The bad news: that screenshot up there’s what splitscreen will look like on your television.
As someone who often games with his significant other, sitting side-by-side on our sofa, this was kind of unacceptable. Difficult to see on our “average” 34″ high-definition TV, it took a while for each of us to adjust our eyes to the two little, individual screens. Items lying around Shanty Town were difficult to spot in the heat of battle, and we’d have to squint to see subtitles. In short, split-screen cooperative play was more frustrating than enjoyable.
Clearly we’d have to purchase a second copy of Resident Evil 5 so we could play over Xbox LIVE. More after the jump.
