Look, I’ve never been one to snowboard. Snow is cold and wet and generally sucks in a major way, and sliding down a hill in the stuff isn’t my idea of a good time.
However, I’ve pissed away hundreds of hours playing snowboarding games, from the SSX series to Cool Boarders. Unfortunately, the genre has been mostly dead for the last few years, excluding the current (and unloved) Shaun White Snowboarding.
Anyway, along comes Stoked, Austrian-developer Bongfish’s Xbox 360 exclusive. I hadn’t even heard about it until a few weeks ago, but it is promising a more realistic direction for the game. Think Electronic Arts’ skate on snow, with legit mountains, real tricks, and a simulation attitude for the sport. It is certainly a different approach, that’s for sure.
But now I’ve had a opportunity to play it. Those looking for the insanity of Amped or SSX are going to be disappointed, but there are some really cool features here definitely worth checking out.
Hit the jump to see if I was hella stoked for Stoked.

Epic’s Mark Rein recently alerted fans on the Gears of War 2 forums that Gears 2 should be receiving a patch this January. Rein said that the patch would address “bugs and exploits” and add “new accomplishments related to downloadable content.” Rein went on to give specifics but failed to explain how long it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.
The stuff the patch is stated to address should save the sanity of the two rational people still playing Gears 2 online. According to Rein, glitches such as “[the] capability to wield an invisible shield, melee through some walls, gain infinite Lancer ammo and equip a shield and a two-handed weapon simultaneously” are getting axed. The boomshot is losing its ability to be fired from the hip directly into the ground. And the shotgun is receiving superior “client side hit detection,” earning it the title Lag Slayer once again.
This epic patch is also set to give quitters more massive penalties, players the capability to Sat/Com spot a Submission flag carrier, and provide superior “spawn protection” against jerkoffs who plant frag grenades in the holy respawn zone. As if all of that wasn’t enough, DLC-related Achievements will be added and the frequency of the in-game Accomplishment progress pop-up will be escalated to ensure that little babies are aware of how close they are to getting their token rewards.
[Thanks, DJ!]

The moment PETA dropped this little press release into our inbox, I laughed until I was sick. The crazy animal rights activists and part-time terrorists have continued to exploit the games industry for attention, naming Fable II its most animal-friendly game of 2008. We are willing to give PETA the attention it craves, however, because in doing this, the group has shown just how tiny about videogames it comprehends.
Praising the game’s “strong pro-vegetarian theme,” PETA has lauded Fable II for awarding players “purity” points when they eat vegetables, and “corruption” points for eating meat.
