Would you pay $10 for Lucidity? LucasArts hopes so screenshot

Downloadable games — no matter which platform we’re discussing here — are great and all, but it’s the highly-original nature of them that stands out to me. Forget about all of those high-def remakes of arcade classics for a moment, because that’s not what I’m referring to. I’m speaking games like LucasArts’ Lucidity.

The XBLA/Steam/D2D game was recently priced (via Shacknews) at the unexpectedly affordable $10 price point, which seems to be the magical cutoff point for most people when it comes to digital game downloads.

I myself am torn on the concept of Lucidity. I adore the art style, especially how both 2D and 3D elements are able to blend in together, but then we get to speaking about the gameplay and I’m not so sure.

There’s something about the nature of these videogames that are so indirect in terms of player control; it’s almost as if the subject matter would be superior suited for a different medium altogether, unfortunately. Am I alone in getting this feeling?

Super Street Fighter IV news & video round-up screenshot

Super Street Fighter IV is coming. Yup, total surprise, I know.

Here’s what you didn’t see coming: it will be a standalone retail disc, but it won’t be sold at full retail price. Capcom wanted to release the new content as DLC, but it’s not possible due to all the changes they’ve done. SSFIV will provide current Street Fighter IV owners with some kind of special bonus though, which sounds kind of odd.

So what’s going to be in Super Street Fighter IV? Eight new characters are coming, two of which you already know about: T. Hawk and new female fighter Juri. The number of new characters could change though as Capcom is open to fan feedback. In fact, a lot of the new content here is based on fan feedback.

A lot of tweaks and rebalancing work is being put into the online code and the original 25 fighters, and because of that, there won’t be any on the web verses compatibility between Super and regular Street Fighter IV.

The new game will be out in Spring, 2010 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. So how do you guys and gals feel about Super Street Fighter IV? Here’s a round-up of our continued SSF IV coverage:

Super Street Fighter IV screenshots appear! screenshot

In an effort to write as many stories about Super Street Fighter IV before it’s officially announced, here’s another one — French Web site JV247 has some images now! (Yes, that’s their watermark on that image up there.)

The site appears to have received the images (and a logo!) from an anonymous source, and says that a trailer for the game will be available later this day along with the official announcement. At the very least, Super Street Fighter IV will introduce T. Hawk and a female fighter named Juri into the mix. No word on what platforms this will be available for yet — is it an entirely new arcade title, or will this be part of a content update for the existing PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Computer versions?

South Park Let's Go Tower Defense Play! screenshots screenshot

I know, it’s not the most exotic of headlines, but that friggin’ game name takes up nearly the entire character limit. Anyway, here are some screens for the South Park XBLA game that was announced way back in 2008 and has only just started to take shape.

As the name suggests, South Park Let’s Go Tower Defense Play! is a “tower defense” game. It looks to perfectly recreate the shoddy art style of the South Park cartoon, and the series characters are joined by robots and gun turrets in their quest to stop encroaching hordes of old people, hippies and ginger kids.

Update to Rock Band 2 brings new features screenshot

If you’ve turned on your 360 to play some Rock Band 2 lately, you might have noticed a new update is available for download. The gang at Harmonix have cooked up some new features for the game and they went on the internet this day. Features include the capability to sort your song list by number of stars scored, better handling of hammer-ons and pull-offs and the long-awaited support for wireless microphones (such as the ones which shipped with Lips).

Perhaps most importantly to me as a heavy consumer of DLC, the Music Store now supports background downloading too. Thank God. I would often actually exit Rock Band 2 to download from the Xbox Marketplace simply because I could queue them all up and continue to check out tracks after I’d started one. Adding the functionality to the Music Store is a long-overdue move.

The PS3 version will be getting the update as well, as soon as it finishes Sony’s certification process.

TGS 09: Forza 3 Fujimi Kaido downhill drift trailer screenshot

Yes, that’s four downhill hairpins in a row you’re looking at. Fresh from the Tokyo Game Show, this new trailer for Forza Motorsport 3 gives us a look at the game’s Fujimi Kaido course, which makes its long-awaited return to the series when the game is released on October 27th.

Left out after the first game, Fujimi Kaido’s re-addition was announced earlier this week when some new vehicles were revealed. Having only played Forza 2, I’ve yet to experience this course for myself and I’m hungry for some of what we’re seeing in this video. As was also reported with the last vehicle reveal, drift points are scored throughout the game, so you’ll be getting more out of this track than just the white-knuckle excitement of driving it in the first place.

I finally got a chance to check out the demo on Xbox Live last night and had a blast. It’s already looking superior than the second game, and that’s a tall order in itself. Have you guys tried it yet?

TGS 09: Dead Rising 2's multiplayer is American Gladiators... with zombies screenshot

You probably saw the trailer earlier and thought “What the f*ck is going on with Dead Rising 2? Because, uh… what?” Well, what you were looking at is Dead Rising 2’s multiplayer component, and we had a chance to play it on the Xbox 360 at an event in Tokyo today.

TGS 09: Patching older 360 games to work with Natal not possible screenshot

Back during E3 when Microsoft introduced Project Natal, one of their tech demos was a version of Burnout Paradise fit to work with the motion detecting hardware. For Tokyo Game Show, Microsoft brought along two other demos for the Japanese market — the Xbox LIVE Arcade title Space Invaders Extreme and Namco Bandai’s Beautiful Katamari.

When I asked Microsoft Games’ Kudo Tsunoda if it would be possible to “patch” existing games to work with Natal, his answer was clear — it’s not likely. While Microsoft was able engineer other publisher’s titles to work with the hardware, a significant amount of code had to be modified. With that in mind, a simple update wouldn’t be enough — a publisher would likely have to re-release the game in its entirety.

TGS 09: Assassin's Creed II vid explores Ezio's 'purpose' screenshot

The protagonist in Assassin’s Creed II becomes an assassin after the The Joker shoots his parents in an alley. Just kidding — Ezio becomes a proper assassin after daddy visits the gallows one sunny afternoon. Vowing revenge, Ezio dons the famous assassin’s suit and starts hacking up those responsible or connected.

Freshly released for Tokyo Game Show 2009, the above trailer explores the origins of Ezio the assassin. Vincent Price A creepy narrator set’s the tone and explains the motivation. “There are certain moments a man never forgets,” he states. “His first kiss. His first duel. But most of all, the moment he discovers his purpose in life. That moment happened 30 years ago.”

Underneath the origins stuff, you’ll get to see a bit more action from the game — stuff like weapon usage as well as those fancy Da Vinci wings. Click the button to watch and expect TGS-floor coverage of AC II in the future.
