TGS 09: Patching older 360 games to work with Natal not possible screenshot

Back during E3 when Microsoft introduced Project Natal, one of their tech demos was a version of Burnout Paradise fit to work with the motion detecting hardware. For Tokyo Game Show, Microsoft brought along two other demos for the Japanese market — the Xbox LIVE Arcade title Space Invaders Extreme and Namco Bandai’s Beautiful Katamari.

When I asked Microsoft Games’ Kudo Tsunoda if it would be possible to “patch” existing games to work with Natal, his answer was clear — it’s not likely. While Microsoft was able engineer other publisher’s titles to work with the hardware, a significant amount of code had to be modified. With that in mind, a simple update wouldn’t be enough — a publisher would likely have to re-release the game in its entirety.

TGS 09: Assassin's Creed II vid explores Ezio's 'purpose' screenshot

The protagonist in Assassin’s Creed II becomes an assassin after the The Joker shoots his parents in an alley. Just kidding — Ezio becomes a proper assassin after daddy visits the gallows one sunny afternoon. Vowing revenge, Ezio dons the famous assassin’s suit and starts hacking up those responsible or connected.

Freshly released for Tokyo Game Show 2009, the above trailer explores the origins of Ezio the assassin. Vincent Price A creepy narrator set’s the tone and explains the motivation. “There are certain moments a man never forgets,” he states. “His first kiss. His first duel. But most of all, the moment he discovers his purpose in life. That moment happened 30 years ago.”

Underneath the origins stuff, you’ll get to see a bit more action from the game — stuff like weapon usage as well as those fancy Da Vinci wings. Click the button to watch and expect TGS-floor coverage of AC II in the future.
