How to back up your WhatsApp messages to Google Drive
WhatsApp often backs up and then saves all your messages to the internal storage on a daily basis. However, you can also backup your WhatsApp data to Google Drive, depending on your settings. In case you have to remove WhatsApp from your Android phone, your messages will be kept for safety. So, make sure to back things up before uninstalling the app.
Google Drive is a great place to back up your WhatsApp messages. When switching from an Android phone to another different Android device, you can have all your messages and media follow you. It’s also considered as an extra insurance if WhatsApp app suddenly gets crashed, which makes you have to uninstall and then reinstall it. Here’s how to back up your WhatsApp with Google Drive:
- Open WhatsApp from your Home screen.
- Tap on the menu icon on the top right, which is three vertical dots.
- Tap on Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
- Select Google Drive settings and then choose the frequency that you’d like to back up your chats.
- Tap on Account.
- Now, select the account that you want to associate with the backup.
- Select an account in the list
- Tap on Add account to add an account that is not found in the list or create a new one.
- Tap on Allow option
- Select Back up over.
- Tap on the circle near “Wi-Fi” to only back up over Wi-Fi or via Wi-Fi or mobile data
- Choose “Include videos” box to back up video messages.
- Tap on Back Up to manually back up your WhatsApp now.

How to restore WhatsApp chats from a Google Drive backup
Once everything has been backed up and you’ve changed your phones or have had to reinstall WhatsApp, it’s time to get all your chats back.
- Open WhatsApp from your Home screen.
- Tap on Agree and continue.
- Allow WhatsApp access to your contacts to search for WhatsApp users.
- Verify your phone number and country when prompted.
- Enter the six-digit verification code that is sent to your SIM card.
- Tap on Continue to let WhatsApp access your Google Drive backup.
- Finally, wait for WhatsApp to check Google Drive backup.
- Tap on the account containing your backup.
- Tap on Restore.
You can now access WhatsApp chats on any Android devices that have WhatsApp installed. Simply sign in and then move your WhatsApp data from one phone to another by following the above steps.
