How to prepare your old Mac for sale or trade-in
If you still wish to keep your old Mac, just skip this step. On the flip side, if you are about to sell or trade in your old Mac, all you need to do is log out of iCloud, iTunes, iMessages, and Find My Mac and erase your hard drive. Remember to make a backup of your Mac before reformatting the hard drive.

Getting your hands on the new MacBook Pro is not very difficult. Simply head over to Apple’s website and order it online. The expected date of delivery is by mid-November.
How to transfer data from your old Mac to your new one
If you wish to keep the same settings, apps, files, folders and accounts, you can transfer data from your old Mac to your new one using Migration Assistant. Here’s how to do it:
Before getting started, you are required to:
- Update your Mac, if it is running OS X 7 or earlier.
- Name your old Mac by heading to System Preferences > Sharing > and type in a name in the Computer Name field.
- Plug your old and new computers into a power source to make sure you have enough juice for the migration process.
Prepare Thunderbolt, FireWire, Ethernet or your local Wi-Fi network to connect two devices.
Are you ready? Just follow these steps:
First and foremost, you will need to connect your old Mac with your new one using Thunderbolt, FireWire or Ethernet. If you are using local Wi-Fi, ensure that both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
On your new Mac
Step 1: Open a Finder window.
Step 2: Choose Applications in the sidebar.
Step 3: Double-click on the Utilities folder.
Step 4: Double-click on Migration Assistant.
Step 5: Choose Continue.
Step 6: Type in your administrator password if required.
Step 7: Choose OK.
Step 8: You are now prompted to choose how you want to transfer your information. Just choose From a Mac…
Step 9: Choose Continue.
On your old Mac
Step 1: Open a Finder window.
Step 2: Choose Applications in the sidebar.

Step 1: Migration Assistant will be looking for a source. Choose your old Mac. (Choose your Time Machine hard drive in case Time Machine backup is used.)
Step 2: Choose Continue.
Return to your old Mac
Step 1: Make sure that the code on your old Mac is the same code as on your new one.
Step 2: Choose Continue.
Return to your new Mac
Check the box next to the one (files, settings, apps, etc.) you would like to transfer to your new Mac. This process may take time, so just be patient.
