If you are using Android, you might know TWRP recovery. This custom recovery is a helpful utility. It includes multiple features on its own such as system backup, partition, and other ones. Furthermore, you need it for installation of other mods like custom ROMs, root and other mods. As with our modification tutorials, you should perform a full backup of your data. The following steps have been tailored to work with Xiaomi Mi 9 devices, you should not try it on other devices.
Download Xiaomi Mi 9 USB Drivers
First, you need to connect your Android phone with the computer. To do so, make sure to install the USB drivers for properly. If not, you can manually install the official drivers from the section below:
- Make sure you have unlocked the bootloader of your phone.
- Activate Developer Options in Settings>About Phone and tap on build number 7 times.
- Toggle on USB Debugging in Settings>Developer Options. Make sure to select USB Debugging.
- Backup all the data on your Mi 9 since installing a custom recovery might delete all your data.
- Keep your phone battery at 50% and make sure your phone will not shut down during the process.
Once you have met all the requirements above, proceed to the actual tutorial.
Steps to Install TWRP Custom Recovery on Xiaomi Mi 9
Step 1: First, download Android SDK from the Android Developers website and install it. You can also set it up with downloading platform-tools and USB drivers package in SDK.
- Windows: Download platform-tools-latest-windows.zip
- MacOS: Download platform-tools-latest-darwin.zip
- Linux: Download platform-tools-latest-linux.zip
Step 2: Once done, connect your Mi 9 to your computer with a USB cable.
Step 3: Now, download TWRP (twrp-3.3.1-35-cepheus.img) and save it into the Fastboot/ADB folder in C drive.
Step 4: Head to the same folder where you have fastboot installed.
If you are using Windows: Open Command Prompt by pressing Shift + Right-click > Open Command Prompt here.
For Mac OS and Linux, open Terminal and navigate to this directory.
Step 5: Enter the following command and hit Enter.
adb reboot bootloader
Step 6 – Wait for your Mi 9 to enter bootloader mode. You can also manually boot your phone in bootloader mode by pressing firmly Volume Up + Power key.
Step 7 – When your phone is in bootloader mode, continue to enter following command and hit Enter.
fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.3.1-35-cepheus.img
Step 8: After you flash the recovery, type in the following command. However, after the phone power offs, press Power button along with Volume Up button so that your phone can boot into TWRP and it will patch itself. Otherwise, you need to reflash TWRP.
That’s done! The TWRP recovery is already installed on your Xiaomi Mi 9. You can then boot into Recovery Mode by pressing firmly the Volume Down + Power keys at once.
